What is Ground Breakers?

  • Ground Breakers is a group that plants native trees and shrubs to help naturalize and beauty the community and to create a healthier environment for people and wildlife.
  • Ground Breakers is an affiliated group of Oakvillegreen Conservation Association and one of Oakvillegreen's Full Circle Tree Initiatives. Oakvillegreen, founded in 1999, is a non-profit, non-partisan environmental organization working to ensure our community becomes healthy and resilient.
  • Ground Breakers was founded in 2004. Since then, Oakvillegreen has grown our tree-related intiatives into four programs including: 1) the tree Seed Collectors; 2) the Tree Foster Parents; 3) Ground Breakers tree planters and; 4) a Heritage Tree Recognition Program.
  • To learn more about the Full Circle Tree Initiatives please visit www.oakvillegreen.org
  • Ground Breakers has partnered with many community groups. They include: local businesses, schools, faith communities, the Rotary, The Salvation Army Emergency Shelter, the Oakville Horticultural Society; The Bronte Historical Society, the Girl Guides; The Boy Scouts and multicultural associations. Our plantings have truly been a community effort and we thank the community for its support.
  • Plantings last for only two hours. The key to our success is many hands make light work.
  • The plantings are organized. Plant material, gardening gloves, shovels, trowels, mulch and everything else we need to get the job done, is supplied.
  • Experts are on hand to explain what we are doing and why, and to show you exactly what to do.

What's In It For Me?

  • The opportunity to work as a team with neighbours and friends on a project that will benefit your entire community for generations to come.
  • The chance to learn more about Oakville's natural environment and native trees and plants.
  • What's in it for STUDENTS? Students requiring volunteer hours will receive a letter from Ground Breakers - one outlining their donated time.  A reference letter suitable for including with a resume is available upon request.
